THE FIRST FLAG RAISING: The first flag raising ceremony at Mulinu’u where the late Malietoa Tanumafili II and the late Tupua Tamasese Meaole hoisted Samoa’s flag of freedom in 1962.

In the background is the late Mata'afa Fiame Faumuina Mulinuu II.

Today, the celebration has shifted to the front of the Government building at Matagialalua, where thousands of Samoans and visitors to these shores will pause to remember this moment, 56 years later.

This year’s Independence celebration was officially opened last night during a Church service at the Catholic Cathedral at Matafele.

Some of the special guests for Independence this year include the Ulu o Tokelau, Afega Gaualofa, Governor of American Samoa, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, President of Fiji, Jioji Konousi Konrote and the President of Nauru, Baron Waqa.
