The Government facilitated a consultation programme on Sustainable Development Goals (S.D.G.’s) and Climate Change on Wednesday.
Hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E.) and its supporting partners, the programme was an initiative by the Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Dr. Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, for selected Colleges in Samoa to discuss the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (S.D.G.’s).
The 17 S.D.G.’s are administered by the United Nations Development Programme (U.N.D.P.) and was adopted by 192 countries including Samoa at the New York Summit in 2015.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (S.D.G.’s) were established to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change. These goals comprise of 169 targets which will guide the development agenda and policies over the next 15 years from 2016 to 2030.
With these goals, all countries and all people, working together through collaborative partnership will implement this plan of action in order to create a harmonic peaceful and sustainable world.
The Sustainable Development Goals are built on the Millennium Development Goals (M.D.G.’s).
However, the S.D.G.’s are more ambitious and go much further as they include areas that were not in the M.D.G.’s, such as inequalities, economic growth, decent jobs, energy, climate change, sustainable consumption and production, peace and justice for all.
The S.D.G.’s will continue the fight against extreme poverty, but will add the challenges of ensuring more equitable development and environmental sustainability, especially the key goal of curbing the dangers of human-induced climate change. Samoa had adopted these goals into its development strategies with the hope that it will assist with the nation’s progress in a sustainable manner.
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and building shared prosperity is in everyone’s interest and it has enormous investment opportunities that will benefit all people and the world.
The goals matter to all of us as we have a shared responsibility for a better and brighter future and so this program aims to raise awareness on the implementation of S.D.G.’s in Samoa as well as the collective benefit of our contribution to the prosperity and sustainable development of our world.
