Authority gives extra day

Owners of commercial vehicles – including taxis and buses – have been given an extra day to register their vehicles.

That day is today, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Land Transport Authority (L.T.A), Leasi Vainalepa Galuvao.

The last day of registrations should have been yesterday.  But at closing time, there were still many vehicles queuing up outside the L.T.A office.  “People usually love to wait until the last minute,” Leasi said.

“This is an ongoing problem. The owners of these vehicles should not wait until the last day to bring in their vehicles for inspection.”

According to the C.E.O, the L.T.A office has been jam packed during the past few days, with the last minute rush to register.

“We’ve already assigned additional cashiers to help ease the long lines and to make things easier not only for them but for us as well,” he said. Leasi reminded that it’s important for members of the public not to wait until the last minute. “If your vehicles are due for inspections, please do not wait until the last minute to have the inspection done. This will lead to long lines.”

As for the extra day, Leasi said this was necessary.

“Because we had plenty of holidays in the beginning of this year we therefore offered another extra day tomorrow (today) for owners to complete their vehicles inspection with us.”

Penalty fees will start applying on Monday.

“We’re giving this extra day with a high hope that our next vehicle inspection will be much easier and everyone will be on time.”

The first inspection of Commercial Vehicles was held last month. Taxi Owner, Sione Vaitagutu from Vaoala praised the L.T.A’s decision.

“This is great news for us,” he said.  “It’s great for Leasi to acknowledge the fact that there have been so many things this year.

“School is back again, ongoing family fa’alavelave, church stuff and so much more.”
